Research Notes
Comments:
"Representatives of every imaginable occupation owned unfree labor in Philadelphia. Joseph Vandigrift was one of many innkeepers who depended on bound workers. In 1775 the city's constables recorded that he owned two male servants, William Longwood and George Warren. Longwood was a groom and no doubt assisted Vandigrift by taking care of the stable where guests' horses were boarded. Warren was listed as a laborer and probably performed a large range of tasks from carpentry to odd jobs. Vandigrift's small labor force also included three children who were old enough to assist in the inn. (1)"
