Research Notes
Comments:
"Representatives of every imaginable occupation owned unfree labor in Philadelphia. ... In 1775, Archibald Burns, a Philadelphia hairdresser, had children who ranged in age from a few months to eight years. Because he had four young children, it would not be surprising to find that the three bound laborers Burns owned were domestic servants. However, Burns's servants were all men, from twenty-two to twenty-four years of age, and were skilled. From their occupations it is clear that Burns had aspirations for his shop beyond dressing wigs: Richard Saxon was a perukemaker; Moses Haines and Moses Jacobs were both jewellers. (1)"
