Research Notes
Comments:
Notes from Costa: "Bricktrader, Kentish, came into Patowmack in Forward, last Year, More Information: Ormsby ran away earlier. Forward Galley, named for London merchant Jonathan Forward, who contracted to transport convicts until his death in 1739. John Allen, Kent, came in in May 1737. [see PRO T 53/39, p. 123; cited in Kaminkow and Kaminkow, Original Lists, pp. 194-195.] Kibble apparently made his way back to England, but was convicted and sent out again, only to escape the following year. [see Va. Gazette, June 29 to July 6, 1739. Washington himself had been a passenger on a convict transport (perhaps the same one?) the previous year and narrowly escaped dying from "a Gaol Distemper." see Gazette (Parks), July 22, 1737, cited in Arthur Pierce Middleton, Tobacco Coast, p. 13.]"
