"Owen Griffith (b. 1746) was an indentured servant for Carter from 1765 to 1770. Sent by his father from England to Virginia, he had already served in the navy for eight years as a captain's clerk and was an excellent penman and accountant. His relations with Carter were never cordial, and in 1770 he apparently tricked Carter into releasing him so that he could return home to a large estate that he pretended to have inherited. He later went out to India. The affair can be traced in Va. Gaz. (Rind), Sept. 27, 1770, and Griffith to Carter, Dec. 21, 1771, Sabine Hall Col." (1)
