"Including settlement certificates and examinations, removal orders, parish apprenticeship indentures, bastardy bonds and orders. Number 18 is an agreement dated 28 Sep 1713 whereby Richard Webb of Beaulieu, husbandman, agrees to work for Charles Rede of Lymington, merchant, on his settlement in Carolina for 4 years. Clauses include the right to 'kill bears, woolfes, foxes and any other savage and ravenous beasts..... not good to eat' and the provision of one pound of powder and three pounds of shot for this. Endorsed is a note that the money is to be paid to Richard Webb's wife and children. Also endorsed is a note that they sailed 8 Jan 1713. Number 38 is a list of Ann Ward's goods, including a rope of onions and other foodstuffs." (1)
"Employment agreement: (i) Charles Rede of Lymington, merchant (ii) Richard Webb of Beaulieu or Brockenhurst, husbandman. 8 Sep 1713. (i) plans to purchase a piece of land in Carolina, America and intends to send over tradesmen, workmen, labourers and servants to build on, clean, manure, dress and improve it in order to make a settlement or plantation. (ii) agrees to serve (i) there as a husbnadman, labourer or servant for 4 years. (i) will pay for passage and provide food and lodging during the voyage. (ii) will receive £12 a year of which £9 will be paid to his wife Ann in England and £3 to (ii) in Carolina and will have food and lodging provided. If (ii) goes out with a gun with his own powder and shot either before or after work and kills bears, wolves or foxes or other beasts not good to eat then he will be allowed to keep the skins. If he kills deer, elks, turkeys and other creatures 'useful in the family' then he will be allowed one pound of powder and three pounds of shot a year and a horse. If he kills 12 deer or turkeys or an equivalent of other creatures good to eat then he will be given skins enough to make a waistcoat and a pair of breeches and gloves. If (ii) wishes to settle in Carolina after the expiration of the term then (i) will make a request to the appropriate authorities." (1)
