"8 Nov 1699. John Barnes brought his servant woman named Catherine Hambleton before the court and declared that he had purchased her from Mr. John Waugh, minister of Stafford County, Virginia. After he bought her, 'Catherine was brought to bed of a bastard child, which said child was also in court with ye mother.' Barnes, who claimed that he did not know Catherine was pregnant when he bought her from Waugh, asked that she 'make oath in open court to ye father of her said bastard child, who accordingly made oath in open court in these words following, that ye said Mr. John Waugh, minister of Stafford County aforesaid was the father of her said bastard child and no other.' At the request of Barnes, the matter was ordered to be put on record." (1)
