"1702 Apr 08. Joice Cooper had been presented by the grand jury for fornication and having a bastard child. She now appeared and swore that her master, Mr. Daniel Gore, was the father of her child. The court ordered that the sheriff take Gore into custody till he gave security to save the parish the cost of supporting the child." (1)

Ordered that the sheriff take Joyce Cooper into custody and 'cause her to receive twenty lashes on ye bare back well laid on' if her fine was not paid.
