Proof of Immigrant Servant Status:
30 Jun 1686: "An indenture was produced to this Court wherein John Blighton was bound to John Clerke for the term of five yeares. The Court order the indenture and the affidavit thereto belonging to bee recorded. Page 516, 25 Aug 1686. Joseph Churnell vs. Willm. Butler. The defendant sold to the plaintiff a servant boy called John Blighton who was in this Court adjudged 16 Dec. 1685 to serve according to the custome of the custome of the country which was then twelve yeares, and on 30 June past an indenture was produced in Court and ordered to be recorded whereby Blighton was to serve John Clarke five yeares and the plaintiff praying the judgment of this Court whether Blighton shall serve according to the custome of the countrey or to the indenture, the Court adjudge the indenture a good indenture and that hee serve accordingly."
