Research Notes
Proof of Immigrant Servant Status:
"Richard Rowser came to South Carolina from Barbados in 1671 a servant to John Maverick. He must have been dutiful and a willing worker, for soon after his arrival the Grand Council noted 'how industrious and useful' he and a fellow servant had been 'in this Collony.' He completed his term of service to Maverick by the Fall of 1674, and set to work as a free person, starting with the land concession offered by the Lords Proprietors to all immigrants, whether servant or free. Before his death in 1683 he had accumulated at least 630 acres. Sarah Rowser, wife of his son William, and presumably heir to Richard's original estate, at her death in 1723, owned property valued at more than £778 including seven slaves." (1)
