Research Notes
Proof of Immigrant Servant Status:
"As impressive as were the achievements of Richard Rowser, even more stunning was the success of John Cattell, who arrived in Carolina in August, 1672, as a servant to Thomas Butler. Starting in 1674 with a 70 acre land concession from the Proprietors as his 'freedom dues,' Cattell, by buying and selling land and presumably holding most of it long enough to grow crops and graze cattle, accumulated a huge estate before his death in 1710. While it is impossible to determine exactly the extent of his property, it included 27 slaves and well over 2000 acres of land. He was elected to serve in the Commons House of Assembly from Berkeley and Craven counties in 1700. Cattell's descendants were among the most prosperous Carolinians. His son Peter left an estate valued at more than £15,391, which included 800 head of cattle and 60 slaves." (1)
