Research Notes
Proof of Immigrant Servant Status:
"1674 Jul 17. Deposition of Thomas Blake aged about 25 years: Capt. Hill's woman servant commonly ate with the men servants while Blake was in the house, and they never lacked food except when the woman neglected to boil it. It was Mrs. Hill's daily practice to ask if 'the folks' had enough hominy. When there was very little, Mistress Hill would always say, '[I] would rather have them leave than lack.' Only once did Blake see Capt. Hill beat the woman, and that was with a strirrup leather. Mrs. Hill beat the servant only with her bare hand. Signed 4 July 1674, Thomas Blake." (1)
