"Richard Cooke, servant to Mr. John Robinson imported in the Golden Fortune, Capt. Pierce Commander, is by the court so judged 16 years of age and ordered to serve until twenty foure according to Act of Assembly." (1)
"I am searching for any additional information on the ship, GOLDEN FORTUNE, Edward PEARCE, master, that sailed, presumably from London, in 1664 for Virginia. What I have learned about this ship is scant, but I do know that my ancestor, Thomas Payne (d. 1673) had been a passenger, transporting himself, his wife Jane (SMALLPIECE), daughters, Elizabeth, Mary and Sarah as well as a servant by the name of Margaret FLOYD who was about 14 years of age. This much has been learned through the records of St. Mary's County, Maryland, where Thomas settled shortly after his arrival. In 1654, a ship of this name was commanded (for several years apparently) by Capt. Samuel TIGHLMAN. There is some reason to beleive that this may have been the same ship through the genealogical links that TIGHLMAN provides. My purpose in this pursuit is to perhaps find clues on the English origins of my ancestor. I feel that if I could narrow down where the ship sailed from (or confirm that it had been London), discover names of other passengers, names of merchants that transported goods on her, or perhaps learn more about the ship's master, Edward PEARCE, that this might be helpful to my search. There is some possibility that Edward PEARCE may have been a son of Thomas Pearce of St. Mary's County, Maryland and brother of Thomas and John Pearce. But this is just speculation based on some record evidence that I have found. I am hoping that someone on the list has come across this ship or these names that might share their information with me." (2)
