Proof of Immigrant Servant Status:
"1674. Whereas Mr. Richard Gower of London, Merchant, did entrust Mr John Bowler, dec’d, with a man servant, who promised to return efforts answerable, but he dying at sea, Mr. Daniell Wyld possessing himself of said servant as belonging to dec’d’s estate, but it appearing by an indenture under the hand of the servant and a certificate from the administrator of the dec’d that the servant was Mr. Gower’s, Lt. Col. William Cole on behalf of said Wyld, and Mr. William Munford on behalf of said Gower, referred themselves to this court to value the servant; and they accordingly value him at L 15, which Wyld is to pay." (1) "I, Richard Gower, of City of London, Merchant, appoint William Munford of King Creek in York River, Merchant, my attorney to demand of Daniell Wyld of Queens Creek, York River, a servant, Howell Merideth, sent and conveyed to John Bowler, lately dec'd, in the 'Thomas & Edward,' Thomas Bridge, late Master, to make payment. 18 Dec 1673.
