Proof of Immigrant Servant Status:
Bond of Joseph Croshaw of Poplar Neck to Jonathan Newell. 25 Jan 1661: Condition is that divers suits are pending between Joseph Croshaw and Jonathan Newell, re Jane Bignall, and we have agreed to let Lt. Col. William Barbar and John Morecroft to settle case, and bind self to abide by their decision. Jos. Croshaw. Wit: Hen. Gooch, Tho. Iken, Rich. Roberts. We award as follows: Maj. Joseph Croshaw will pay to Mr. Jonathan Newell L 32 by bill of exchange in London 30 days after sight of said bills for what Newell laid out for transport of Jane Bignall, and Newell is to discharge said Jane as his servant. 3 Feb. 1661, Wm. Barbar, Jno. Morecroft. Accounts and expenses of Jonathan Newell re Jane Bignall mention: "riding down the country to Usseter," journey to Litchfield, carrying her to Gravesend, die[t] and lodging at Deale, to the trouble, boat and hands to Poplar Neck.
