Proof of Immigrant Servant Status:
"This indenture made the fowerth day of Aprill Anno Dom: 1689 betweene Margrett Devorage of Upton upon Severne in County of Wales, Spinster, of the one part & James Trewolla of London, Merchant, of the other part; Wittnesseth that the said Margrett Devorage in consideration that the said James Trewolla hath undertaken at his own proper cost & charges to transport hir into his Ma[jes]ties Plantac[i]on of Virginia and to provide for hir meet, drink, washing, lodging, apparrell & all other necessarys during hir stay here in England, and alsoe for the said intended voyage, and by the space & terme of four yeares next after hir arrivall into the said Plantacon and at the end of the said terme to finde and allow hir decent apparrell and such other allowances & necessaryes as by the Custome of the said Countrey are in like cases given and granted, the said Margrett Devorage hath volluntarily & of hir owne free consent without any deceit or sinister practice bound & pledged hir selfe & by these pr[e]sents doth binde and oblidge hir selfe to the said James Trewolla to serve him or his Assignes according to the custome of the said Plantac[i]on by the space & term of fower yeares to comence from the time of hir arrivall in the said Plantac[i]on and the said margrett Devorage doth by these pr[e]sents covenant promise and grant to & with the said James Trewolla dureing all the said terme faithfully diligently & honestly to serve the said James Trewolla his Exrs. & assignes in all maner of service according to the Custome of the Countrey & shall not at any time hereafter retract or deny this hir volluntary act & consent; In Wittness whereof the said parties have enterchangeabley heereunto sett their hands and seald the day & yeare above written. Signed & Delivered in pr[e]sence of Willm: Trussell, George Camun, James Trewolla. There are to certifie that the above named Margrett Devorage came before me Denis Russell, Mayor of the Towne of Falmouth in the County of Cornewall this fowreth day of Aprill An[n]o Dom[ini] 1689, and declared hir selfe to be of the age of nineteene yeares & to be single & unmarried & no covenant or contracted Servant to any person or persons whatsoever & alsoe hir volluntary consent & desire to serve the above named James Trewolla according to the tennor of the Indenture above written; As Wittness whereof I have hereunto putt my hand this day & yeare above written.
