"Primarily based on The Petty Papers: There is some question as to whether
Thomas Petty was the son of Thomas Petty and Rachel Wilson or if he was the son of Hubert Petty and Rebecca. Hubert Petty first appears in the deeds of Lancaster Co VA in 1665 when he purchased 150 acres on Morraticoe Creek from Abraham Bush. His wife Rebecca first appears when she co-signed a deed with
Hubert selling 1/2 of their property in 1667. The only time Hubert appears
with name Petty is in application for a colonial land grant in 1672--he
usually was Patty or Patey. Spring 1687 Hubert Patey prepared & signed his LWT [Last Will and Testament], Walter Welch Executor. Hubert named his wife Faith Patey and gave her their home & much of the personal estate. He named his only child Thomas
Patey & gave him all the land to receive when he came of age--Walter Welch
was made guardian for Thomas until he was of legal age. (Lancaster Co WB Vol
5 pg 113).
"FHL film #013064 pg 323--Maryland Patent Records dated 7 Jun 1652 indicates
that in 1651 Hebert Pitty servant of William Turner was transported to
Calvert Co MD. Turner's wife and sons, William, Edward J, and John along
with servant Hebert Pitty his servant since June 1651. Turner died in 1664
in Calvert Co MD will listing his children including a daughter not
previously mentioned, Mrs Steven Chilcock. It was suggested that by perhaps
locating the marriage of this
daughter in England, the English origin of Hubert Petty might be determined.
It is estimated that Hubert was probably born around 1640.
"Because of this land transaction, Marilyn Mees considers Hubert the father
instead of Thomas. The name Hubert is never used as a family name in later
generations. There are no further records of Hubert Petty. Delores Kottelly
doesn't believe the Hubert theory. There are some Pettys who went to the
Carolinas and have Hubert & Hubbard in their lines. She thinks Hubert might
have been an uncle or some other relative of Thomas.

MD, his wife and sons: William, Edward J, and John Turner, along with
servant Herbert Petty, his servant since June 1651. Document dated 7 Jun
1652.
"William Turner d 1664 Calvert Co MD. His will names his children including
a daughter that wasn't named on the other document. She was m Dr Steven
Chilcock who "died within a year". If we could find where she and her
husband resided in England, we could get a line where Hubert Petty (Herbert
Pitty) came from.
"After 7 yrs, Hubert received his release that he had earned and was given
the usual monetary gifts that he qualified for. He left there and went the
short distance to Lancaster Co VA where he settled. He purchased 150 acres
of land from Abraham Bush 30 Nov 1665.
"He had two wives: Rebecca, then Faith. The only child we can record is
Thomas about 1675--he had 9 known children.

info. She had a chance to talk to Mr. Petty's son in 1983 when he was 81.
